Bek Chapman is a singer, musician, actor, comedy-writer, voice over artist and session singer living in Melbourne, Australia. With an extensive background in musical theatre, cabaret, children's entertainment and music performance, Bek's voice is versatile and she takes to direction openly, and always with humour and enthusiasm.
She began singing at the age of 3, mimicking Linda Rondstadt in Pirates of Penzance and was consequently encouraged to join the Australian Children's Choir at age 7 with whom she performed in The Victorian Opera's production of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and Peter Combe's 'The Adventure's of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie'.
She learned the piano growing up under Maureen Milton School of Music and obtained an A.Dip.A in Classical Pianoforte at 22. Performing as the lead in musicals throughout secondary school, she trained in classical voice under Margaret Dalglish and studied classical voice under Bettine McCaughan and Linda Thompson and composition under Brenton Broadstock and Stuart Greenbaum at the University of Melbourne. While studying, she had her first voiceover gig, voicing ANZCA's Music Theory Examinations. She also co-founded 1950's style a capella girl group, The Nymphs.
Over the next eight years, The Nymphs appeared on Spicks and Specks (2010), the Marngrook Footy Show (2011), toured with Rockwiz (2011) and appeared in an ABC promo (2014). Whilst performing in many festivals over her years with The Nymphs, she also toured with Tony Bones Entertainment and Class Act Theatre, acting, singing and dancing to children for theatre in education incursions in primary schools all around Australia's east coast. She also performed with Beaumaris Theatre in various shows, where her role as 'Maria' in The Sound of Music saw her nominated for a Guild Award. She has also played the role of Melissa in the Savoy Opera Company'sPrincess Idaand Lady Jacqueline Carstone in Babirra Music Theatre's Me & My Girl.
She took up formal dance training with Janelle Peta-Miller's Mystique Dance Academy in Belgrave South for four years, after being trained by her at Upwey High School during the musical theatre studies with Malcolm Anderson and Grant Nichol. She became the singing voice of Pepper in Cartoon Network Asia's "Cha-Ching!" and performed backing singing roles for Dolly Diamond's cabaret shows. She has also sessioned for The Audreys, Katie Underwood,Pinky Beecroft and The White Russians, theDC3 and Damian Cowell's Disco Machine (ex-TISM) whose new band she would later join.
When the Nymphs dissolved, Bek founded gypsy-jazz-noir band, Anne of the Wolves. After the release of her debut EP, Rainmaker, (2013), the band performed at the Festival of Voices in Tasmania and supported the DC3(TISM), Kristen Hersch, and Ade Edmondson& The Bad Shepherds. By this time, she was performing disco children's parties with Bop Till You Drop whilst also teaching pre-school music with Mini Maestros, and was chosen to feature on their Mini Maestros albums 'Jiggle & Giggle', 'Jump & Bump' and 'Move & Groove.' She was also asked to voice their TV Commercial.
In 2016, chronic laryngitis due to overuse forced extensive leave from full-time performing right before the public release of the Anne of the Wolves' EP Wild, and the follow-up albumTriffids & Trees. Not knowing when she would be vocally well enough to perform again, she consequently released all the albums on bandcamp including a live album, Live at the Cherry Bar, a gig which ended up being the band's last. (For all albums, go to anneofthewolves.bandcamp.com.)
In 2020, after therapy and rest, she is now well and singing bv's and playing various instruments in folk'n'roll group Rich Davies & The Low Road , whilst also singing backing vocals and doing extremely daggy dancing with Damian Cowell's Disco Machine. She is also producing her original radio comedy podcast Hectic Justice!
During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, Bek re-started dancing at The Space, doing Broadway Jazz classes online. A renewed sense of joy in singing, dancing and acting resulted in auditioning and being accepted into Associated Studios Australia in 2021 where she currently studies Advanced Musical Theatre.
